[Yaadein_Meri] Proofs that Shirk, Bid'ah & Sins - and its people - Divide/Split the Ummah

Do not hate each other. Do not envy each other. Do not turn away from each other and be servants of Allah as brothers. It is not lawful for a Muslim to abandon his brother for more than 3 days (Sahih Muslim).

A fairly long read, but a really good one. Adam.

Proofs that Shirk, Bid'ah & Sins - and its people - Divide/Split the Ummah

From amongst the many doubts that Ahlul-Bid'ah spread to deceive the Muslims is their desperate lie "warning against Shirk and Bid'ah and Sins splits the Ummah." Of course, anyone who ponders over the Qur`an and Sunnah with a submitting heart will see that Allaah commands us to warn against Shirk and Bid'ah and sins, and that warning against Shirk and Bid'ah and sins is from enjoining the good and forbidding the evil, and it is from the means of uniting the Muslims upon the truth, and it is from the means of preserving the Religion.

Here are proofs from Allaah's infallible revelation (Qur`an and Sunnah) that clearly show that it is Shirk, Bid'ah and sins that split the Ummah - and not those who warn against Shirk and Bid'ah and sins for the benefit of the Ummah!

Proofs that Shirk splits the Ummah

Allaah said (what means): ...and be not of Al-Mushrikoon (the disbelievers in Tawheed, polytheists, idolaters, etc.). Of those who split up their religion (i.e. who left Tawheed), and became sects, [i.e. they invented new things in the religion (Bid'ah), and followed their vain desires], each sect rejoicing in that which is with it. (Ar-Room, ayat 31-32) -----> Means, do not be of the idolators who split up their religion, i.e., changed it by believing in parts of it and rejecting other parts. Some scholars read this asFaraqu Dinahum, meaning "neglected their religion and left it behind them." These are like the Jews, Christians, Zoroastrians, idol worshippers and all the followers of false religions, besides the followers of Islaam, as Allaah said: (what means):

Verily, those whodivide their religion and break up into sects (all kinds of religious sects), you (O Muhammad) have no concern in them in the least. Their affair is only with Allaah, Who then will tell them what they used to do.(Al-An'aam, ayah 159) -----> The followers of the religions before us had differences of opinions and split into false sects, each group claiming to be following the truth. This Ummah too has split into sects, all of which are misguided apart from one, which is Ahlus-Sunnah Wal-Jama`ah, those who adhere to the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah and what was followed by the first generations, the Companions, their followers, and the Imams of the Muslims of earlier and later times. In his Mustadrak, Al-Hakim recorded that the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) was asked which of the sects was the saved sect, and he (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: What I and my Companions are upon. [1]

Allaah said: (what means): Verily, those whodivide their religion and break up into sects (all kinds of religious sects), you (O Muhammad) have no concern in them in the least. Their affair is only with Allaah, Who then will tell them what they used to do. (Al-An'aam, ayah 159)

Mujahid, Qatadah, Ad-Dahhak and As-Suddi said that this Ayah was revealed about the Jews and Christians. Al-'Awfi said that Ibn 'Abbaas commented (about Allaah's statement, which means) Verily, those who divide their religion and break up into sects:"Before Muhammad was sent, the Jews and Christians disputed and divided into sects. When Muhammad was sent, Allaah revealed to him: Verily, those who divide their religion and break up into sects, you have no concern with them in the least. It is apparent that this Ayah refers to all those who defy the religion of Allaah, or revert from it. Allaah sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth so that He makes it victorious and dominant above all religions. His Law is one and does not contain any contradiction or incongruity.

Therefore, those who dispute in the religion - ...and break up into sects - religious sects, just like those who follow the various sects, desires and misguidance, then Allaah has purified His Messenger from their ways. In a similar Ayah, Allaah said: He (Allaah) has ordained for you the same religion which He ordained for Nuh, and that which We have revealed to you. (Ash-Shoora, ayah 13) A Hadith reads: We, the Prophets, are half brothers but have one religion. This, indeed, is the straight path which the Messengers have brought and which commands worshipping Allaah alone without partners and adhering to the Law of the last Messenger whom Allaah sent. All other paths are types of misguidance, ignorance, sheer opinion and desires; and as such, the Messengers are free from them. Allaah said here: You have no concern with them in the least. (6:159). [2]

Allaah said (what means): Indeed there has been an excellent example for you in Ibraaheem (Abraham) and those with him, when they said to their people: "Verily, we are free from you and whatever you worship besides Allaah, we have rejected you, and there has started between us and you hostility and hatred for ever, until you believe in Allaah Alone"... (Al-Mumtahinah, ayah 4)

The Shirk (worshipping other than Allaah) separated these idol-worshippers from the Jama'ah. The Jama'ah was Ibraaheem ('alayhi salaam) and those with him. As 'Abdullaah Ibn Mas'ood (radiallaahu 'anhu) said: The Jama'ah is those upon the truth, even if you are by yourself. [Sharh Usool I'tiqaad Ahlis-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah - al-Laalikaaee] So whoever leaves the truth for Shirk or Bid'ah, he leaves the Jama'ah and splits the Ummah.

Proofs that Bid'ah splits the Ummah

The Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: ...And this Ummah will divide into 73 sects, all in the hellfire except one. They said: Which one is that, Oh Messenger of Allaah? He said: Those who are upon what I and my companions are upon. [Abu Dawood, at-Tirmidhee]

The Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: ...Whoever turns away from my Sunnah, then he is not of me. [Bukharee, Muslim]

In-sha` Allaah it is clear from these above narrations that Bid'ah splits and divides the Muslims, and the blame of splitting the Ummah into sects falls on those who who turn away from [the] Sunnah and are not upon the 'Aqeedah and Manhaj of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) and his companions (radiallaahu 'anhum).

Proofs that Sins splits the Ummah

The Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: Never do people love each other for Allaah's sake and then separate except that it is due to a sin of one of them. [Bukharee in Adab al-Mufrad; authenticated by Al-Albaanee]

Again, another clear proof that it is disobedience to Allaah that splits and divides the Ummah - not warning against disobedience to Allaah. And know that Shirk and Bid'ah are also the greatest sins, the greatest forms of disobedience. So this hadeeth - by itself - is enough to refute this false principle that "warning against Shirk and Bid'ah and Sins splits the Ummah."

Rather it is disobedience itself that splits the Ummah. [Note: In this specific case of sins - to the exclusion of Shirk and Bid'ah - the perpetrator does not leave the Jama'ah (the Saved Sect), although it is a means of splitting the Ummah.]

Proofs for staying away from and warning against Bid'ah and its people

In the well known hadeeth of al-'Irbaad ibn Saariyah (radiallaahu 'anhu), the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: ...And beware of newly invented matters (in the religion), for verily every newly invented matter (in the religion) is a bid'ah, and every bid'ah is a misguidance. -----> Stay away from bid'ah and its people!

So how did the companions implement this command to beware of bid'ah, and to beware of those who turn away from what was revealed?

It is narrated on the authority of Yahya bin Ya'mur that the first man who discussed about Qadr (Divine Decree) in Basra was Ma'bad al-Juhani. I along with Humaid bin 'Abdur-Rahman Himyari set out for prilgrimage or for 'Umrah and said: Should it so happen that we come into contact with one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam), we shall ask him about what is talked about Taqdir (Division Decree). Unintentionally, we came across 'Abdullaah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab, while he was entering the mosque. My companion and I surrounded him. One of us (stood) on his right and the other stood on his left. I expected that my companion would authorize me to speak. I therefore said: Abu 'Abdur Rahman! There have appeared some people in our land who recite the Qur`an and pursue knowledge. And then, after talking about their affairs, added: They (such people) claim that there is no such thing as Divine Decree and events are not predestined. He ('Abdullah ibn 'Umar) said: When you happen to meet such people, tell them that I have nothing to do with them, and they have nothing to do with me. And verily they are in no way responsible for my (belief). [First hadeeth in Saheeh Muslim]

So Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu 'anhumma) said: I have nothing to do with them, and they have nothing to do with me!

Another example pertains to the kind of bid'ah that Allaah forbade in His statement (what means): It is He Who has sent down to you (Muhammad) the Book (this Qur`an). In it are Verses that are entirely clear; they are the foundations of the Book; and others not entirely clear. So as for those in whose hearts there is a deviation (from the truth), they follow that which is not entirely clear thereof, seeking Al-Fitnah (polytheism and trials, etc.), and seeking for its hidden meanings. But none knows its hidden meanings save Allaah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: "We believe in it; the whole of it (clear and unclear Verses) are from our Lord." And none receive admonition except men of understanding. (Aali 'Imran, ayah 7)

The Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) recited this [above] verse and then said: If you see those who seek the verses which are not entirely clear, then they are those whom Allaah has named, so beware of them. [Bukharee, Muslim]

Student Adam Lazerus (hafidhahullaah) relayed that Shaikh Rabee' bin Hadee al-Madkhalee (hafidhahullaah) said, after bringing this hadeeth: "So the people of deviance and desires seek to base their religion upon the verses that are not entirely clear. So the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) meant it is wajib to warn the people from them, because they are astray and they lead the people astray. And this is how Ahlul Bid'ah are in every time and in every place, whatever type of bid'ah [they're upon]. You should never think of a bid'ah as something small or insignificant." [3]

So the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) commanded us to beware of them. Look how the companions implemented this Prophetic command.

During the Khilafa of 'Umar bin al-Khattab, there was an individual named Sabeegh bin 'Asl. Sabeegh was spreading doubts among the people regarding certain verses from the Qur`an. So 'Umar had him brought in so that he could hit him and put him in prison. Then 'Umar brought Sabeegh again, hit him, and sent him back to prison. And then, on the third time, Sabeegh said, "O leader of the believers. If you want to kill me, then do it in a good way, and if you wanted to remove that which was in my head [evil], then by Allaah, they have left."

But 'Umar never felt completely safe with him, so after everything that happened, Sabeegh was exiled to 'Iraq, and it was ordered that he be abandoned. [4]

Proofs for not working with People of Bid'ah

Verily, those whodivide their religion and break up into sects (all kinds of religious sects), you (O Muhammad) have no concern in them in the least.Their affair is only with Allaah, Who then will tell them what they used to do. (Al-An'aam, ayah 159)

...Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression...(Al-Ma`idah, ayah 2) Bid'ah and Shirk are from sin and transgression.

So when individuals direct their du'aa or their slaughtering or their sujood or any act of worship to the inhabitants of the graves, or to the jinn, or to the awliyyah, or to the angels, or to the Prophets, those who are directing these acts of worship to other than Allaah, these transgressors are the ones splitting the Ummah - not the ones who obey Allaah and His Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) in warning the people against these actions and its people for the preservation of the Religion and the benefit of the Muslims!

Or when individuals call to democracy (man-made law), declare Muslims to be kufaar and incite the people to rebel against the Muslim rulers, these transgressors are splitting the Ummah - not the ones who obey Allaah and His Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) in warning the people against these actions, statements and its people for the preservation of the Religion and the benefit of the Muslims.

Or when individuals slander the sahaaba, revile the Messengership of Prophet Muhammad, and imitate the Jews and Christians and other disbelievers, these transgressors are splitting the Ummah - not the ones who obey Allaah and His Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) in warning the people against these actions and statements and its people for the preservation of the Religion and the benefit of the Muslims.

Or when individuals deny attributes of Allaah, and make awful and horrendous statements of kufr such as "the Qur`an is created," or "Allaah and the creation are one," or "Allaah is everywhere," these transgressors are splitting the Ummah - not the ones who obey Allaah and His Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) in warning the people against these statements and beliefs and its people for the preservation of the Religion and the benefit of the Muslims.

How can warning against evil be the reason for the splitting of the Ummah when Allaah commanded Ibraheem ('alayhi salaam) to free himself from the polytheists, and how can it be the case when Allaah commanded Prophet Muhammad (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) to free himself from those who split up their religion into sects?

How can warning against evil be the reason for the splitting of the Ummah when Allaah said (what means): You [true believers in Tawheed, true followers of Prophet Muhammad and his Sunnah] are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind; you enjoin the good and you forbid evil, and you believe in Allaah.(Aali 'Imran, ayah 110) And every knowledgeable Muslim knows that the greatest good is Tawheed, and the greatest evil is Shirk and then bid'ah.

How can warning against evil be the reason for the splitting of the Ummah when Allaah's Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: By He in Whose Hand is my soul! You will enjoin righteousness and forbid evil, or Allaah will send a punishment on you from Him. Then, you will supplicate to Him, but He will not accept your supplication. (Ahmad, At-Tirmidhi)

How can warning against evil be the reason for the splitting of the Ummah when Allaah's Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: Whosoever sees an evil, then let him change it with his hand. If he is not able, then with his tongue. And if he is not able to do that, then with his heart and that is the weakest of Eeman. [Muslim]

How can warning against evil be the reason for the splitting of the Ummah when Allaah's Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: The Religion is sincere advice. We said: "For who?" The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: For Allaah, His book, His messenger, the leaders of the Muslimeen, and their general masses. [Muslim]

How can warning against evil be the reason for the splitting of the Ummah when Allaah's Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: When the people see an evil and they do not try to change it, then Allaah will cover them all with humiliation from Himself. [Abu Dawood, no. 4338, (authentic)]

This is why Allaah revealed this threat (which means): And fear the Fitnah (affliction and trial, etc.) which affects not in particular (only) those of you who do wrong (but it may afflict all the good and the bad people), and know that Allaah is Severe in punishment. (Al-Anfal, ayah 25)

These afflictions, calamities and trials are Allaah's punishment on the Ummah as a result of the shirk, bid'ah and sins. So the very reason these people of bid'ah say they're not warning against Shirk and bid'ah is the very reason we are not united. SubhanAllaah! May Allaah unite us on the haqq (truth) and the straight path. Ameen.

Furthermore, forbidding and warning against Bid'ah is from the means of preserving the Deen. Remember it was bid'ah that caused the Deen and 'Aqeedah of the previous nations to be lost and corrupted. As Shaikh-ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said, "In fact, the kufr of the Jews and Christians is because of bid'ah. They introduced new things into the religion and those things took them completely away from the true message of Musa (Moses) and 'Eesa (Jesus) 'alaihumma salam."

Proof that the people of bid'ah don't want good for the Ummah

Back to the above-mentioned ayah (what means): It is He Who has sent down to you (Muhammad) the Book (this Qur`an).

Read carefully what Shaikh Rabee' bin Hadee al-Madkhalee (hafidhahullaah Ta'aala) said concerning this ayah, as relayed by student Abu Yusuf Khaleefah (hafidhahullaah Ta'aala):

"So Allaah has clarified in this verse the true state of the people of deviance and desires, and it is that the people of deviant desires intentionally want evil for the Ummah. [The proof for this is Allaah's statement about them that they are ---->seeking fitnah] They seek to make fitnah upon the Muslims, because their intentions are not sound. And because their hearts are sick, and they want the people to be afflicted with their ailments.

And Allaah indeed said about the disbelievers: Oh you believe. If you obey a group from amongst those who have been given the Scripture (Jews and Christians), they would cause you to apostate after having faith, being disbelievers. (Aali 'Imran, ayah 100)

The disbelievers and Christians and Jews would love that the Muslims would apostate from their Religion. And the people of bid'ah have a large portion of this characteristic that the kufaar have - having evil intentions and wanting evil for the people of good.

[Abu Yusuf Khaleefah said: So just as the kufaar don't want good for the Muslims, Ahlul Bid'ah don't want good for the Muslims. As Ibn Taymeeyah said: "All people of bid'ah resemble either the Christians or the Jews (or both)."]

So from here we understand that it is obligatory to beware of these individuals with the utmost caution. Allaah has informed us in this verse we mentioned [seventh ayah of Surat Aali 'Imran] that those who have in their hearts deviance follow that which is unclear from the Qur`an, seeking fitnah, intending to put people upon fitnah in their Religion, and intending to mislead the people from the true Religion of Allaah to that which they are upon of bid'ah and misguidance, and that which they are upon of doubts and conjecture and deviance. These people want evil for those who trust them and the one who mixes with them.

So based upon this, you see the innovators traversing upon many different paths and methods to stop the people of the truth - especially the youth - to prevent them from the true Methodology of Allaah.

So these individuals [innovators] have methods that they are experienced in, matters that they are cunning and conniving in [deceptional, scheming, underhanded] for the purpose of misleading the people, especially the youth in that which they have cultivated their youth upon. To the point that you'll find from amongst these individuals those who don't know how to make wudhoo properly, but yet he has with him an abundance of doubtful matters he can bring to confuse the people..." [5]

Abu Yusuf Khaleefah (hafidhahullaah) said: "The reason why Ahlul-Bid'ah do all the distortions and false interpretations of text is because they don't submit. If they were to submit to what is in the Qur`an and Sunnah upon the understanding of the Sahaaba, they wouldn't do these things. ...All these 72 deviant sects have this common denominator: false interpretations of the Religion." [6]

What the scholars say about those who make deviant statements, such as "warning and refuting bid'ah and its people causes division"

Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan was asked: "Many people say that those who refute the people of innovation are the cause of separation."

Shaykh al-Fawzan (hafidhahullaah) answered: "Yes, separation between the truth and the falsehood; this is correct. We make a distinction between truth and the falsehood and (also between) the people of truth and the people of falsehood. We are going to refute (the people of falsehood), and the Scholars refuted (the people of falsehood). This is not for the purpose of causing division; this is to gather the people upon the truth, because with people remaining upon misguidance and upon the speech of falsehood, then this causes division between the Muslims. As for clarifying the truth for the people, so they can gather upon it, then this is the da'wah towards unity, not the da'wah towards separation. The da'wah towards separation is when it is said, 'The people of falsehood are not to be refuted.' This is the da'wah to division if they only gave thought." [7]

So Shaikh Fawzaan (hafidhahullaah) distinguished between one who separates the truth from falsehood for the benefit of the Ummah and one who splits/divides the Ummah with Shirk or Bid'ah or Sins and false principles. The first is praiseworthy and in clear imitation of Prophet Muhammad (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) and all the Prophets, and the second is evil, in clear imitation of those who opposed and fought Prophet Muhammad (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam).

Shaikh Zaid Ibn Hadee al Madkhalee (hafidhahullaah) said: "The Mubtadi' (innovator) is the cause for splitting; because splitting is connected to innovation and unity is connected to the Sunnah. The obligation of refuting the Mukhaalif (opposer) is not lifted from the scholar due to anticipation of harm, unless it is harm he is not able to bear. Then (in this case), Allaah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear. The earth is not devoid of people of knowledge who will carry out refutation against the Mubtadi' and the Mukhaalif." [8]

Question: Some Hizbiyoon say that [the] Salafiyoon eliminate a caller every day. How do you refute this claim?

Shaikh Ahmad an-Najmee (rahimahullaah) answered: They [the Salafiyoon] don't eliminate anybody. It's the person himself who eliminates himself when he chooses the innovations and to follow the innovators. Yes!

And enjoining the good and forbidding the evil is from the means of uniting the Ummah upon the truth - upon what Allaah is pleased with - and clarifying the truth.

Allaah said (what means): And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allaah (i.e. this Qur`an), and be not divided among yourselves. (Aali 'Imran, ayah 103)

Shaikh 'Abdul-'Azeez ibn Baaz said: "The order to unify the Muslims and unite their word upon the truth and to hold fast to the rope of Allaah does not mean they should not censure wrong beliefs and practices - whether from the Soofees or other than them. Rather, what the order to hold fast to the rope of Allaah necessitates is to order the good, forbid the evil, and to clarify the truth with the clear Sharee'ah proofs to whosoever is misguided or has a mistaken opinion, until they unite upon the truth and turn away from that which opposes it. All of this is included in His, the Most Perfect's, saying:

...Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression...(Al-Ma`idah, ayah 2)" [9]

Abu Yusuf Khaleefah (hafidhahullaah) said: "Enjoining the good and forbidding the evil does not cause separation. It brings about unity and strengthening the ranks of the Muslims. Why do you think that the Prophet (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) and the sahaaba (radiallaahu 'anhum) were a tight unit? Because the Prophet (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) corrected the errors whenever they happened."

So by refuting the bid'ah and their people, the scholars do not divide the Ummah, but rather the scholars distinguish the truth from falsehood, and the people of truth from the people of falsehood for the benefit of the Ummah.

But those who oppose the truth and fear being exposed, they are the ones who push these false principles to divert the people from the evil they themselves are calling to. So beware of following anyone in opposition to what Allaah revealed to His Messenger, who did not speak from his own desires!

And this doubt is actually an old doubt that the mushrikeen used in the time of the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam), accusing him of dividing.

Rather, the ones who divide the Ummah are the innovators themselves who commit and call to bid'ah (sometimes even shirk) and hide behind false principles, thus leaving Ahlus-Sunnah wal Jama'ah (the original affair) to become, for example, a Soofee, thus splitting the Ummah into two sects, or an Ikhwanee, thus splitting the Ummah into three sects, or a Tableeghi, thus splitting the Ummah into four sects, or an Ash'aree, thus splitting the Ummah into five sects, etc..., and like this.

Clarifying the truth is an obligation upon those who have knowledge and the ability - the true scholars of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah who follow and hold fast to the Qur`an and Sunnah upon the understanding of the companions.

Question: Is it permissible for the 'Ulamaa to clarify the dangers of partisanship, disunity, and the various groups and organizations to the youth and general masses?

Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan (hafidhahullaah) answered: "Yes, it is obligatory upon them to clarify the dangers of partisanship and the dangers of splitting and disunity so that the people will be upon knowledge and clarity, because some people join these groups thinking they are upon the truth.

This is a must that they (the 'Ulamaa [scholars]) clarify (the dangers) to the people. The educators from amongst (the people) and the general masses, (it must be explained) to them the dangers of partisanship and division because if the 'Ulamaa are silent, the people will say, 'The 'Ulamaa are aware about this and they are quiet.' So the people will enter into misguidance from this direction; so it must be clarified when the likes of these (evil) things happen.

(Furthermore) the danger on the general masses is greater than the danger upon the educators. This is because the general masses are more likely to think that these things are correct and true if the 'Ulamaa are quiet about them." [10]

Shaikh Rabee' said: "So I say enjoining the good and forbidding the evil is an obligation which has been prescribed upon the Ummah collectively, yet it is not permissible for anyone to abandon what he is individually capable of from fulfilling it. As turning away from such a matter that you are capable of fulfilling, inevitably and surely, only results in you earning a sin.

It is from these evidences found within the Book of Allaah, the Sunnah and the ijma' of the Muslims which indicate the obligation of enjoining the good and forbidding the evil that we derive the proof of the obligation of refuting that which conflicts with the truth." [11]

And this obligation and command from Allaah to clarify the truth and warn against evil is from the mercy of Allaah, and His wisdom. By the fulfillment of this command and the clarification of the truth and the warning against Shirk, Bid'ah and sins, the Ummah is warned against evil. And by this, the proofs become established and the excuses cut off.

The Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: The people will not perish until they have no excuse left for themselves. [Ahmad, with an authentic chain]

And by the mercy and wisdom of Allaah, this group which refutes falsehood and warns against Shirk and Bid'ah and sins - not fearing the blame of the blamers - will always exist until the command of Allaah comes, in accordance with the statement of the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam): There will never cease to be a group from my Ummah upon the truth, uppermost. They will not be harmed by those who desert them or those who oppose them, until the command of Allaah - the Blessed and Exalted - arrives, and they are in this state.[Bukhaaree, Muslim, Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah and Al-Haakim]

So not only does warning against Shirk and Bid'ah and Sins not split the Ummah, but rather - from the perfect wisdom of Allaah, The All-Wise - it is a means of uniting the Muslims upon the truth, strengthening the ranks, and preserving the Religion.
