What is special about the word الله ?
بسم الله الحمد لله According to Imam Qurtubi the word الله Allah is the most comprehensive name of God. He also states that some scholars have gone so far as to say that this is the الاسم الأعظم the greatest name. No other being is named with the word الله and that is why no dual or plural form of this word exists in the Arabic language. This is unlike English where the word 'god' has the plural 'gods'.
Using the greatest name to address Allah when making a dua is a source of reward for the person making dua and increases the chances of it being answered. As reported by Abu Dawud in an authentic hadith the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) once heard a man address Allah and on hearing the words the man chose to address Allah he said, لَقَدْ سَأَلْتَ اللَّهَ بِالِاسْمِ الَّذِي إِذَا سُئِلَ بِهِ أَعْطَى وَإِذَا دُعِيَ بِهِ أَجَابَ indeed you have asked Allah by the name which if dua is made with it the supplicant will be answered and his request will be granted.
All the hadith texts which mention the الاسم الأعظم do not mention what this name is clearly. This has led to scholars over the years coming to different conclusions as to which of the names actually is الاسم الأعظم. There are 14 possible opinions as quoted by Ibn Hajar. A large number of scholars have chosen الله as the name because it is the one name that occurs in every hadith text talking about this subject.
