SRINAGAR, India– Mohammad Afzal Guru, a convicted Kashmiri terrorist who was hanged last week, in his last letter to his family asked them not to mourn his death, portraying himself as a martyr.
In a letter dated Feb. 9 –penned just over an hour ahead of his execution – Mr. Guru said he congratulated all those who "continue to side with truth."
"I request my family that they should not feel any remorse for me rather they should respect this honor," Mr. Guru added in his letter, written in Urdu and released by his family on Sunday.
The letter concludes with the words: "Allah is there to protect and help you all, Allah Hafiz," or goodbye.
Mr. Guru was convicted to death for his role in a 2001 attack against the Indian Parliament. His execution sparked unrest in Kashmir, where many believe he did not get a fair trial.
Following the 42-year-old's death, his family have refused an offer to visit Delhi's Tihar Jail, where he is buried, instead requesting that his remains be brought home to Kashmir.
India's Home Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde, is expected to chair a meeting later this week that will decide if Guru's body is to be returned to his home region.
A letter sent by jail officials to Guru's family, informing them that his mercy plea had been rejected, failed to reach them before his death, further inflaming outrage in Kashmir.
Earlier Sunday, an local lawmaker in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, Sheikh 'Engineer' Rasheed, suggested naming Lal Chowk, an area in Srinagar after Mr. Guru, renewing his call for self-determination Kashmir, a region that is split between Pakistan and India and claimed in its entirety by both.

Mr. Rasheed, was temporarily detained by police after Guru's hanging for attempting to organise a march from the northern Kashmiri border district of Kupwara to Mr. Guru's birthplace of Sopore.
At a press conference on Sunday Mr. Rasheed said: "I hope that Lal Chowk, which is a symbol of our state, will be renamed Afzal Chowk after the martyr of our nation Afzal Guru."
Mr. Rasheed spoke in support of Hurriyat – a separatist party led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani – to hold strikes in support of Mr. Guru.
He added: "I am with Hurriyat, if they gave a strike call I will follow them for this initiative. Not only for the cause of bringing back the dead body but for the right to self-determination that is my birthright."
Mr. Guru's family could not be immediately reached for comment.
