ASSALAM - O - ALAIKUM,عَنْ أُمِّ المُؤْمِنِينَ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ الله عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ: "وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْتُونَ مَا آتَوْا وَقُلُوبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ": قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: أَهُمْ الَّذِينَ يَشْرَبُونَ الْخَمْرَ وَيَسْرِقُونَ؟ قَالَ: لَا يَا بِنْتَ الصِّدِّيقِ وَلَكِنَّهُمْ الَّذِينَ يَصُومُونَ وَيُصَلُّونَ وَيَتَصَدَّقُونَ وَهُمْ يَخَافُونَ أَنْ لَا يُقْبَلَ مِنْهُمْ، أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ يُسَارِعُونَ فِي الْخَيْرَاتِ
رواه الترمذي ، وصححه الألباني
On the authority of Umm al Mu'mineen A'ishah radi Allahu anha who narrated, "I asked the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) concerning this ayah, 'and those who give that which they give with their hearts full of fear' (23:60) A'ishah radi Allahu anhu asked, 'Are they those who drink alcohol and steal?' The Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) replied, 'No, daughter of as-Siddeeq! Rather they are those who fast, and those who pray and those who give in charity while they fear that it (their deeds) will not be accepted from them. Those! They are the ones who race in all that is good (al khayrat).'" [Narrated in al-Tirmidhi, Sahih according to shaykh Albani]
Vocabulary of Hadith
وَجِلَةٌ - fearful (but not just any fear, but a fear in which a person trembles and shivers)
يَشْرَبُونَ - they drink
يَسْرِقُونَ - they steal
يَصُومُونَ - they fast
يُصَلُّونَ - they pray
يَتَصَدَّقُونَ - they give charity (sadaqah)
يُسَارِعُونَ - they race
الْخَيْرَاتِ - all types of good deeds
Lessons from Hadith
- Wajilah is a type of fear that causes a person trembles and shivers. You may recognize this word from surah al-Anfaal ayah 2, "The true believers are those who when Allah is mentioned, their hearts tremble (wajilat quloobuhum)."
- The believers never feel safe because of their deeds. They fear that Allah will not accept their deeds.
- We should be more concerned with the acceptance of our deeds, than the deeds themselves. Allah ta'ala says, "Allah only accepts from those who have taqwa." (Surah al-Ma'idah)
