It will soon be easier and quicker for Saudi employers to have visas processed when hiring foreign workers, with the launch of an electronic portal in Riyadh this week.
After visas are approved, the system will allow immediate upload from the Ministry of Interior to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Osama Sanusi, undersecretary for consular affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was quoted as saying in a local Arabic daily.
It previously took on average one month for the visas to move between the two ministries.
This process was carried out manually under the old system. The foreign affairs ministry would then send the documentation to the country concerned, where the visas would be endorsed.
The Saudi Foreign Ministry is also studying a plan to link the Ministry of Justice to the electronic system, to further streamline the authorization process.
The electronic visa service for individual expatriates was launched a while ago by the Foreign Ministry and is being used regularly. The ministry has received awards for its electronic and automated system, the first such initiative in the Middle East.
