RIYADH: Addressing a common problem with foreign workers' permits, the Labor Ministry called Friday on all employers to verify that their workers are engaged in the jobs stated on their work permits (iqamas).
"Companies and establishments can change their workers' professions without exception to the actual trades they are engaged in except to the professions reserved for Saudi citizens," the Saudi Press Agency reported, quoting a statement of the ministry. Job categories reserved exclusively for Saudis are human resources, reception, civil security and liaison with the government.
Establishments are required to rectify the profession statements over the next two months beginning on July 9 and ending on Sept. 10, the statement added.
The ministry also warned that the update of status about workers' profession would be a condition for upgrading their Nitaqat status. The scheme grades all private companies to three categories depending on the level of Saudization achieved by each. Companies that are not in compliance will have their ability to recruit or keep foreign workers curtailed.
The ministry also called on establishments with branch offices not to show the names of all employees in a single statement. The statements should show specifically the number and trade of workers in each branch.
