Remaining Steadfast After Ramadaan

Shaykh Saleh al-Fouzan

http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/6653/z4c880b7a79b6d.gif

Sufyaan ibn `Abdillaah radhiallahu `anhu said:

"O Messenger of Allah,
tell me something about Islaam,
which I cannot ask anyone else besides you."

He (Sallallahu Alayhi wasallam) said:

"Say: 'I believe in Allah' and then
be steadfast (upon that)."

[Saheeh Muslim (38)]

The hadeeth is proof that the servant is obligated, after having eemaan in Allah, to persevere and be steadfast upon obeying Him by performing the obligatory acts and avoiding the prohibited ones. This is achieved by following the Straight Path, which is the firm Religion without drifting away from it, to the right or to the left.

If the Muslim lives through Ramadaan
and spent his days in fasting
and his nights in prayer
and he accustomed himself
to doing acts of good,
then he must continue to remain
upon this obedience to Allah
at all times.

This is the true state of the slave, for indeed, the Lord of the months is One and He is ever watchful and witnessing over his servants at all times.

Indeed, steadfastness after Ramadaan and the rectification of one's statements and actions are the greatest signs that one has gained benefit from the month of Ramadaan and striven in obedience. They are tokens of reception and signs of success.

Furthermore, the deeds of a servant do not come to an end with the end of a month and the beginning of another, rather they continue and extend until he reaches death.

Allah says:

 "And worship your Lord
until the certainty (death) comes to you."

[al-Hijr: 99]

If the fasting of Ramadaan comes to an end, then indeed the voluntary fasting is still prescribed throughout the entire year. If standing in prayer at night during Ramadaan comes to an end, then indeed, the entire year is a time for performing the night prayer. And if the Zakaat-ul-Fitr comes to an end, then there is still the Zakaah that is obligatory as well as the voluntary charity that lasts the whole year. This goes the same for reciting the Qur'aan and pondering over its meaning as well as every other righteous deed that is sought, for they can be done at all times.

From the many bounties that Allah has bestowed upon his servants is that He has placed for them many different types of righteous acts and provided many means for doing good deeds. Therefore, the ardor and zeal of the Muslim must be constant and he must continue to remain in the service of his Lord.

It is unfortunate to find that some people perform worship
by doing different types of righteous deeds
during Ramadaan.
They guard strictly upon their five daily prayers in the masjid,
they recite the Qur'aan a lot
and they give in charity from their wealth.
But when Ramadaan comes to an end,
they grow lazy in their worship.
Rather, sometimes they even abandon the obligations,
both generally, such as praying in congregation,
and specifically, such as praying the fajr prayer.

And they commit forbidden acts
such as sleeping over the time of prayers,
indulging in places of foolishness and entertainment,
and mingling in parks, especially on the day of `Eid.
Obtaining help from these evils is only
through the grace of Allah.

Thus, they demolish what they have constructed
and destroy what they have established.
This is an indication of deprivation and a sign of perdition.

We ask Allah for His safeguarding and protection.

(Aameen)

Indeed, this type of people
take the example of turning in repentance
and ceasing from committing evil deeds
as something specific and restricted
to the month of Ramadaan.
And they stop doing these (good) acts
when the month stops.

Thus, it is as if they have abandoned sinning
for the sake of Ramadaan, and not out of fear of Allah.
How evil are these people who do not know Allah,
except in Ramadaan!

Truly, the success that Allah grants His servant lies in the fasting of Ramadaan. His assisting him to do that is a great favor, thus the calls for the servant to be grateful to his Lord.

This understanding can be found in the statement of Allah after completing the favor of the month of fasting:

"(He wants that you) must complete
the same number of days,
and that you must magnify Allah
(by saying Allahu Akbar)
for having guided you,
so that you may be grateful to Him."

[2:185]

The one who is grateful for having fasted, will remain upon that condition and continue to perform righteous deeds.

Verily, the true way of the Muslim is that of one who praises and thanks his Lord for giving him the ability to fast and make qiyaam. His condition after Ramadaan is better than it was before Ramadaan. He is more receptive to obey, desiring to do good deeds and quick to enforce the obligatory acts. This is because he has gained benefit form this prominent institute of learning. It is that of one who fears for having his fast not accepted, for indeed Allah only accepts from those who fear Him.

The righteous predecessors would struggle to complete and perfect their deeds, hoping afterwards, that it would be accepted and fearing that it would be rejected.

From the reports of `Alee (radhiallahu `anhu),

"Be more concerned with
having your deeds accepted
than the deed itself.
Did you not hear Allah say:

 'Verily Allah, only accepts those
from those who fear Him.
(i.e. possess taqwaa).'

[5:27]

"[Lataa'if ul Ma`aarif, p. 246]

`Aa'ishah (radhiallahu `anhu) said:

"I asked the Messenger of Allah
concerning the ayah:

'And the one who are given
what they are given
and their hearts tremble with fear.'

Are they the ones who drink alcohol and steal?"

He
(Sallallahu Alayhi wasallam) said:

"No, o daughter of as-Siddeeq.
Rather, they are the ones
who fast and pray and give in charity
yet fear that it won't be accepted from them.
They are the ones who rush to do good deeds
and they are the first to do them."

 [Saheeh Sunan at-Tirmidhee 3/79-80]

So be warned and again be warned
of turning backward
after having attained guidance
of going astray after persevering.
And ask Allah to provide you with duration
in doing righteous deeds
and continuity in performing good acts.
And ask Allah that He grant you a good end,
so that He may accept our Ramadaan from us.

and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you;
and perhaps you will be grateful.
[Baqarah:185]

Fasting Six Days Of Shawwal

Abu Ayyub al-Ansari reported
Allah's Messenger as saying:

He who observed the fast of Ramadan
and then (after the festivity of Eid)
followed it with six (fasts) of Shawwal.
it would be as if he fasted perpetually.

http://alquranic.com/group/mail557/sahih-muslim493.gif

[Sahih Muslim]

FASTING SIX DAYS OF SHAWWAL

(Sittu Min Shawwal)

by  Anonymous

Shawwal is the tenth month in the lunar calendar, as mentioned earlier. The first of Shawwal is Eidul Fitr. After the festivity of Eid it is recommended to observe six days of fast. This fast may be observed continuously non-break, or it may be observed one day at a time. If you observe it continuously, you may start on the fourth day and end on the ninth of day Shawwal, or you may select days at random, provided you complete six days before the end of Shawwal. For instance, you may observe the third, fifth, seventh, ninth, 14th and 15th days. Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari (raa) related the Messenger of Allah, (sallallahu alaihi Wasallam), said:

"Whoever observes the Ramadan fast
and follows it with six days of fast in Shawwal,
it is as if he has fasted Dahr (the whole year)."

(Bukhari)

It has been mentioned earlier that Dahr means the whole year. Possibly it may also mean forever, or for life.

Analyzing this hadith, our jurists (`Ulama) explained how according to this hadith, a Muslim who fasts during Ramadan every year and follows it with six days fast of Shawwal, will be credited for fasting a whole lifetime. The Jurists correctly said:

A good deed (hasanah) is rewarded
a minimum of ten times its equivalent.
It follows, then, that ...
one Ramadan is equivalent to ten months of fasting,
and the clincher, six days, is equal to two months, (6x10=60).
That undoubtedly completes the year's twelve months.

Thus, we see the wisdom and the reason
why the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) mentioned six days
after Ramadan in Shawwal, not five or seven.

Can a person start fasting
six days of Shawwaal
when he still has days to make up
from Ramadaan?

Question:

If a person fasts six days of Shawwaal after Ramadaan when he has not yet completed the Ramadaan fast because he did not fast ten days of Ramadaan for a legitimate reason will he have the same reward as a person who fasted all of Ramadaan and followed it with six days of Shawwaal, i.e. will he be like a person who fasted for a lifetime? Please explain to us, may Allaah reward you with good.

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

The precise rewards for the deeds which people do for the sake of Allaah is something which is known only to Allaah. If a person seeks the reward from Allaah and strives to obey Him, his reward will not be lost,

as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

"We shall not make the reward of anyone
who does his (righteous) deeds
in the most perfect manner to be lost."

[al-Kahf 18:30].

If someone has missed some of the days of Ramadaan, he should fast them first, then fast six days of Shawwaal, because he cannot follow the fast of Ramadaan with six days of Shawwaal unless he has completed his Ramadaan fast.

And Allaah is the source of strength. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions, and grant them peace.

Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa'imah, 10/392

When should a Muslim start fasting
six days of Shawwaal?

Question:

When can I start fasting six days of Shawwal, since we have annual leave right now?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

You can start fasting six days of Shawwaal from the second day of Shawwaal, because it is haraam to fast on the day of Eid.

You can fast the six days at any time during Shawwaal, although the best of good deeds are those which are done soonest.

The standing committee received the following question:

Should fasting the six days be done immediately after Ramadaan, following the day of Eid or is it permissible to do it a few days after Eid in the month of Shawwaal or not?

They replied as follows:

These days do not have to be fasted immediately after Eid al-Fitr; it is permissible to start fasting them one or more days after Eid, and they may be done consecutively or separately during the month of Shawwaal, according to what is easier for a person. There is plenty of room for maneuver in this matter, and this is not obligatory, it is Sunnah..

And Allaah is the Source of strength. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions and grant them peace.

Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa'imah, 10/391

Should a woman start with
making up missed fasts from Ramadaan
or with the six days of Shawwaal?

Question:

What should a woman do first: fast the six recommended days of Shawwal ( Alayam Alsetta Albeed) or fast equivalent to the days she missed in Ramadan due to her monthly period?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

If she wants to earn the reward mentioned in the hadeeth of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him),

"Whoever fasts Ramadaan
then follows it with six days of Shawwaal,
it will be as if he fasted for a lifetime"

(reported by Muslim, no.. 1984),

then she should complete her Ramadaan fasts first, then follow it with six days of Shawwaal, so that the hadeeth with be applicable to her too, and she will gain the reward mentioned in it.

As regards the matter of permissibility, it is permissible for her to delay making up her Ramadaan fasts, provided that she makes them up before the next Ramadaan comes along.

Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid

Do the six days of Shawwaal
have to be fasted consecutively?

Question

With regard to the six days of Shawwal after Ramadaan, is it a condition that they should be fasted consecutively, or can I separate them? I want to fast them in three sessions, on the two days of the weekend.

Praise be to Allaah.

It is not a necessary condition that they should be fasted consecutively. If you fast them separately or consecutively, it is OK. The sooner you do them, the better, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meanings):

"..so compete in good deeds" [al-Maaidah 5:48]

"And march forth in the way (which leads to) forgiveness from your Lord." [Aal Imran 3:133]

[Moosa peace be upon him said:] "..and I hastened to You, O my Lord, that You might be pleased." [Ta-Ha 20:84]

And (you should hasten to fast these six days) because delaying may cause problems. This is the view of the Shaafa is and some of the Hanbalis, but it is OK if you do not hasten it and you delay it until the middle or end of the month.

Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

Our companions said: it is mustahabb to fast six days of Shawwaal. Because of this hadeeth they said: it is mustahabb to fast these days consecutively at the beginning of Shawwaal, but if one separates them or delays them until after Shawwaal, this is permissible, because he will still be following the general guidelines of the hadeeth. We have no dispute regarding this matter, and this was also the view of Ahmad and Dawood.

Al-Majmoo Sharh al-Muhadhdhab

Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid

{ اے رب میں نے تیری رضا کے لیے جلدی کی ہے }

Sunni Muslims in Tehran have been banned from congregating at prayers marking the end of Ramadan.
Iran, a Shia country, ordered its Sunni minority not to hold separate prayers in Tehran for Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim festival that brings the month of fasting to an end. They were instead asked to have a Shia imam leading their prayers – something that is against their religious beliefs.
Hundreds of security police were deployed in the capital to prevent Sunni worshippers from entering houses they rent for religious ceremonies.
In recent decades, Iranian authorities have refused Sunnis permission to build their own mosques in Tehran. There is currently no Sunni mosque in the capital, despite there being several churches and synagogues for much smaller Christian and Jewish populations. .
"Tehran's security police prevented Sunni worshippers from performing Eid prayers in various parts of the capital," the official website of the Sunni community in Iran said. "They surrounded the houses where Sunnis perform prayers and have prevented worshippers from going inside."
Thousands of Shia worshipers on Wednesday stood in rows behind Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who led the crowd at prayers held in Tehran University. The Iranian regime uses Eid prayers to demonstrate that the country's political figures are united behind its leader. Politicians from different groups are supposed to attend the prayers and their absence can be interpreted as a sign of dissent.
Under the Iranian constitution, religious minorities should be respected and should have representatives in parliament. Two days ago, several Sunni MPs wrote a letter to the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, asking for their communities in Tehran to be allowed to hold separate Eid prayers.
Sunnis in Tehran have complained in recent weeks of being told by officials to provide written assurances guaranteeing not to hold Eid prayers in houses in the capital.
Shaikh Abdul-Hameed Esmail Zehi, a Sunni prayer imam in Zahedan, a city in south-east Iran, criticised the regime in a recent sermon for imposing restrictions on Sunnis.
"I would like to request the supreme leader to stop discriminative and illegal steps of some officials, as they have been forbidding Sunni minorities in mega cities of Iran to offer prayers in congregation specially Eidain [the Eids] and Friday prayers. This is the demand of all Sunnis in Iran," he said, in quotes carried by the Sunni community's website, Sunnionline.us.
Iran boasts that its Shia and Sunni populations get along, but Sunnis have complained of a crackdown by the Islamic regime in recent years. The regime, which has blamed Sunnis for recent bombings in south Iran, is at odds with most of the Sunni-ruled countries in the Middle East.
Other religious minorities in Iran have been facing restrictions. Seven leaders of the Bahá'í community are serving 20-year jail sentences. Bahá'ís in Iran are deprived of rights such as education or owning businesses and are often persecuted for their beliefs.
Last week, the Bahá'í community's United Nations office wrote to Iran's minister of science and technology, Kamran Daneshjoo, calling on the regime to end discrimination against Bahá'í students who recently had their universities closed.
