Dear Adnan Ali, The word 'Awliya' is the plural of the word 'Wali' in the Arabic language. And the meaning of Wali is a good and close friend. Thus, when the word 'awliya Allah' is used, it basically means the friends of Allah. They are called so because Allah says in the Quran:

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Al Baqarah verse 257: Allah is the friend (wali) of those who believe in Him. He (Allah) brings them out of the depths of darkness (ignorance), into the light (of guidance).

The above aayahs means that Allah is the friend of the pious believing people who believe and worship Allah Alone, without assocaiting or invoking others with Him.

Ahmed Raza Khan claimed to base his beliefs on the Qur'an and the Sunnah, in monotheism, and the Last and Final Prophethood of Prophet Mohamed (saws). Barelvis follow the Ash'ari and Maturidi schools of aqidah, the Hanafi school of fiqh, and the Qadri, Chishti,Naqshbandi or Suhrawardi Sufi orders.^[

The person, Ahmad Raza Khan, who started the Barelvi sect was originally a student of the Dar-ul-Uloom Devbhandh, and thus a Devbhandhi himself. Due to some differences of opinion, he moved away from the teachings of Devbhandhis, and formed his own madrasa in the district of Barelvi in India; and thus the students who graduated from the madrasa at Barelvi came to be recognized as Barelvis. They too claim to follow the Hanafi school of thought, but their base has become mysticism or Sufism and they too propagate a significant amount of 'shirk' and 'bidah' in their teachings.
