~:C.C.4.U:~ THE BEST OF MARK TWAIN

  THE BEST OF MARK TWAIN

Funny part of it is, there is actually a guy that looks exactly like Samuel Clemens, Mark Twain, did in his pictures. he has the same mustache, same ragged haircut, and even has suits tailor made, by a local seamstress to fit the role of Mark Twain. If you didn't know any better, you would think it was the REAL Mark Twain. (And no, this guy has not had any plastic surgery, or anything done, to make him a spitting image of him.)

The wife and I lived in Hannibal, Missouri, for a bit of time. Now, those that do not know about America, Hannibal is the birth place of Samuel Clemens, otherwise known as Mark Twain. He was born in Hannibal Missouri, and lived his childhood there, and he moved from Missouri when he was 26, because he had no interest in being enlisted in either the Confederate, or Union Army, to participate in the Civil War.
When he was a child, he enjoyed exploring the caves that surrounded Hannibal, and actually had meet a man that he refers to in his book, that showed him one of the deepest caves around Hannibal. Also, when he was a teenager, he was the keeper of the lighthouse, that stands tall on the north side of Hannibal. The lighthouse was used to alert the steamboat captains how close they were to the shore, as Hannibal was a regular docking area for the steamboats.
After he left Missouri, he moved to Nevada, and actually tried his hand at mining, where he failed - tremendously. So, he tried his hand at writing, since he had prior experience doing that. He worked for a local newspaper from 1862 -1864. (He had experience as a type setter, as a teenager, as well as covering for his older brother when he had started a local paper, and was absent.)
It was not until 1876 that he actually wrote a book, with the story leaning towards his childhood. He portrayed himself as the character of Tom Sawyer, and in later books, used his childhood local friends as other characters in the books.
In the stories, the real-life Tom Blankenship would become Huck Finn, who lived behind them in a log cabin.

If anyone is every in the Us, and in the area of Hannibal, Missouri, in May, stop in and enjoy the Mark Twain Festival they have each year. Each year it has a different theme, of something to do with Samuel Clemens life, while living in Hannibal, or about his stories of Hannibal.
I am attaching a few pics, of some of the stuff from Hannibal. They have done a lot of restoring of the area that he was raised in, so I hope you enjoy.

1) Samuel Clemens standing outside the local drugstore, where he and his mother lived on the second floor

2) The current paddle boat that takes out passengers, 3 times a day, for an hour cruise

3) The bronze statue portraying Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn

4) The Becky Thatcher house, that was also portrayed in his writings

5) The tombstone of the man known as "Injun Joe"

6)
The entrance into Samuel Clemens childhood home (this was while his father was alive. Back than, women could not own a home)

7)His home that he shared with his wife, and 3 children, in Connecticut

8) Another view

9) His childhood home, along with a picket fence that was told in his writings

10) This landscape of rocks is on the North side of town, by the Mississippi River, just off of Highway 36

11)His dad's law office. This was back when the Justice of the Peace was also a law officer

12) Woodlawn Cemetery in Livy's hometown of Elmira, New York State, buried beside her and the children
