The spectacle in London saw a quarter-of-a-million people gather on the banks of the Thames to watch the 11-minute firework show which followed the traditional counting down of the final seconds by Big Ben.
People cheered as the capital's famous landmarks were bathed in the light of the display, which included streamers shot out of the London Eye and blazing rockets launched from the banks of the River Thames.
There were impromptu fireworks displays throughout much of London as the city remembered a year that saw the success of London 2012, the Queen's diamond jubilee and the announcement that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting their first child.

Thousands of revellers partied on the streets of Edinburgh - dubbed the home of Hogmanay -  to welcome the new year.
Around 75,000 partygoers counted down the last 10 seconds of 2012 before joining in a mass rendition of Auld Lang Syne after the clock struck midnight in Edinburgh.
The world-famous event saw Scottish rock band Simple Minds headline the Concert in the Gardens, following performances from The View and Bwani Junction.

Early celebrations got under way in the city dubbed the home of Hogmanay last night with a torchlight parade.
A record crowd estimated at 35,000, including 7,000 torch carriers, were led by the massed pipes and drums and the Up Helly Aa' Vikings from Shetland. The procession made its ay through the city streets to the burning of the effigy of a Viking boat and a spectacular Son et Lumiere display on Calton Hill.
Events will also take place on New Year's Day, including sled dog races at Holyrood Park and a triathlon which will see competitors swim 400 metres of the Royal Commonwealth Pool, cycle 11 miles around Arthur's Seat and then run 3.5 miles.
The Loony Dook, the annual dip in the River Forth at South Queensferry, will also take place.

The Great Maqam
By IOL Shari`ah Researchers

Jabir Ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) Related : "Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) Touched The Yamani Corner. Then He Made Three Rounds Circumambulating Around The Kabah Hastily And Made The Other Four Walking. Then He Went Near The Maqam of Ibrahim and recited the Qur'anic verse, [Take as your place of worship the place where Abraham stood (to pray)] (Al-Baqarah 2:124). Then he stood behind the Maqam facing the Ka`bah and performed two Rak`ahs (in Prayer)."

After relating many Hadiths about the Prophet's prayer behind the Maqam and his circumambulation around the Ka`bah, Ibn Kathir said that the Maqam is the rock on which Prophet Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) stood when the walls got too high for him and he needed to be in a higher position.

Abu Talib said that Ibrahim's footprints appear on the rock up till now.

Anas Ibn Malik also said that he saw the footprints of Prophet Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Maqam. Then people kept on wiping it until they disappeared.

Maqam Al-Khalil (Prophet Ibrahim)

The Maqam is the rock on which Prophet Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) stood while building the Ka`bah. Another opinion says that it is the rock on which he stood when he called people to perform Hajj there. Others say that it is the rock on which he stood while his daughter-in-law was washing his head when he went there asking about his son Isma`il. All these opinions can be coordinated by saying that Prophet Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) stood on that rock while doing all or most of the mentioned things.

Description of the Maqam

The Maqam is located under a wooden dome standing on four slight stony columns, among which there are four iron windows from its four sides. The Maqam is to be reached from the eastern side. The dome above the Maqam is ornamented with gold, and white-colored from its top. It was renewed in 810 A.H. upon the order of An-Nasir Farag, king of  Egypt.

Position of the Maqam Before and After Islam

The current position of the Maqam is the same as it was before Islam, upon the advent of Islam and in the eras of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr and `Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). But in the Caliphate of `Umar, a flood happened and drew the Maqam from its place and placed it in front of the Ka`bah. Then `Umar returned it back to its original place in the presence of the masses.

The Ornament of the Maqam

The first one to decorate the Maqam was the Caliph Al-Mahdi Al-`Abbasi. He feared it may decay, as it was made of soft rocks. He sent one thousand dinars to make the necessary procedures in order to get it strengthened. Then in the era of Al-Mutawakkil, it was ornamented with gold in 236 A.H.

The decoration put in the era of Al-Mahdi was removed in 256 A.H. to mend the Maqam. So it was renewed and hardened and more gold and silver were added to it. It was surrounded by two gold belts, made of 992 mithqal of gold, and a silver belt. The Maqam was brought to the palace and chemical compounds were made for it to be hardened and mended therewith, as some pieces fell down while removing the decoration in 255 A.H. in the process of mending it. After it was already made stronger, the Maqam was taken to its place in the Holy Mosque and was fixed there in 256 A.H.

The distance between the Maqam and the Black Stone is about 29 cubits and 9 fingers, and from the middle of the Ka`bah and the Maqam is 27 cubits, and between Shazurwan (part of the Ka`bah) and the Maqam and the well of Zamzam 24 cubits and 20 fingers. The Maqam has been subjected to many mending processes and still up till now.

[Yaadein_Meri] Racing the Imam in prayer (By: Adil Salahi)

Racing the Imam in prayer
Adil Salahi | Arab News

Congregational prayer is one of the most important aspects of Islamic worship. It helps to bring people in the same locality together, so that they would know each other and establish friendly and close relations. Moreover, their frequent meetings at prayer times give them a chance to learn more of one another's work and what they can provide. Thus, they will seek to get what they need from within their own neighbourhood. Furthermore, congregational prayer instils discipline within the community. When people takes instructions from the imam during worship, which is a bond between each individual and God, they learn the value of discipline in their lives.  Stressing the importance of discipline in prayer, the Prophet (peace be upon him) says, as quoted by Abu Hurayrah:

"When a person lifts his head before the imam, does he not fear that God will make his head like that of a donkey, or that He will make him look like a donkey?"

 (Related by al-Bukhari).

This is the strongest form used by the Prophet to emphasise the importance of following the imam in all actions, and not to go ahead of him. The Prophet said: "I am your imam. Therefore, do not go before me in bowing, prostration or standing up." He also said: "An imam is appointed so that he is followed." However, people are often impatient. When the Prophet noticed that his admonition in this respect has not given its desired results, he stated the hadith we are discussing, warning of a stern punishment on the Day of Judgement. Thus, a person who races the imam in prayer runs the risk of having a changed shape marking him out among all people. We should emphasise here that this is merely a warning, and it does not follow that everyone who does not abide by the order to follow the imam will be changed in form. Such a person, however, exposes himself to this risk.

A question arises here about the validity of the prayer when a person moves ahead of the imam in a congregational prayer. Scholars have expressed different views, going into considerable details. They agree that it is forbidden to precede the imam in any action. Everyone in the congregation is required to follow the imam, not to precede him. It is indeed reprehensible to do any movement or say any words of the prayer at the same time as the imam, except for the first takbeer, which signals the beginning of the prayer, and the salam, which signals its end. A person who says these phrases at the same time as the imam makes his whole prayer invalid.

What worshippers in the congregation are required to do is to follow the imam. When he signals a move, they make it shortly after he has signaled it, and before he has gone to the next move. If a person delays moving until the imam has completed the next action and went into the following one, then that person's prayer is invalid. To explain: We stand to read the Quran, then bow, then stand up again, and then go into prostration. If the imam bows and stands up while someone in the congregation remains standing because he wants to finish his recitation, then that person's prayer is invalid. If he bows when the imam is still bowing, his prayer remains valid but his action is not correct. He should follow the imam.

A violation of this instruction that is often done by worshipper occurs in the last prostration. The imam signals moving to the last sitting for tashahhud. Yet we see people remaining in prostration for a whole minute or longer. This is absolutely wrong and they run the risk of making their prayer invalid.

How Arabs buy 'wives' and dump them in a few weeks

How Arabs buy 'wives' and dump them in a few weeks
MiD DAY reporters posing as a would-be bride and her friend trying to help her.
Mumbai: A month-long investigation by MiD DAY journalists has revealed a twisted form of human trafficking that involves rich Arabs, greedy Qazis, sham marriages, agents and girls lured into the flesh trade or those looking for a quick buck.

The modus operandi: set up a temporary or time-bound wedding to a rich Arab. The affluent Arab offers a negotiated amount for the services of a 'wife' during his stay in India. The price for the 'booty' varies from Rs. 15,000 to nearly a lakh for the 10-day marriage. Girls from poor families are sold like commodities to the Arabs, many of whom arrive on tourist visas from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Iran, Oman, Kuwait and Qatar. While this may seem shocking to many, the women involved in this latest form of flesh trade are often willing participants.

The Arab and The Qazi
These predators have been perpetrating a blatant crime under the veneer of nikaah, abusing the Islamic rules of marriage. Abusing the sanctioned provision which allows a Muslim man to have four wives at a time, many old Arabs are not just marrying minors in Mumbai and Hyderabad, but marrying more than one minor in a single trip to the country.

The Pimp and The Victim
A healthy stream of women keep flowing into the city from all parts of the country to solicit the Arab clientele who have turned Mumbai into a sex haven. For as little asRs 2,000 per job, scores of women line up every evening hoping to catch the eye of the adulterous tourist.

Over a month-long operation, Kranti Vibhute posed as a would-be bride and Bhupen Patel as her friend trying to help her get the deal. They found that these deal brokers, prostitutes and Qazis have been running this business quite explicitly.

A Qazi, who solemnises the weddings and also facilitates the divorce proceedings, takes 50 percent of the negotiated price as his cut. The agent, who sources the girls, takes 25 percent of the balance amount.

The pimps, cab drivers and sub-agents charge Rs. 500-1,000 per deal.

The Arab gets a sex slave for a temporary period, who he calls his 'wife', and takes her on a vacation with him. Once the honeymoon period is over, he brings her back dumps her with a 'talaaq' and goes back to the Qazi's office for a new bride. The girl gets her cut and lines up for the next husband to come her way.

The Qazis solemnise these sham marriages, in violation of Islamic principles of nikaah and talaaq. A woman cannot be married off to another man unless her first husband gives her a divorce, or she has sought khula (separation) and has completed the iddat period (a gap of at least three months and 13 days).

Victims?
Owing to abject poverty and wretched living conditions, many women are forced into the world of flesh trade. While some girls have fallen victim to the flesh trade, tricked by the promise of monetary benefits and a better standard of living, others have chosen the path to make a quick buck.

During the course of the operation, MiD DAY discovered that several women, who were once sold as brides to Arabs, have now turned into agents and pimps. The women now scout villages and cities looking for fresh blood to incorporate into the trade.
